Our tasting menu for the day includes Maru Ten's signature Udon noodles and Ten don. And also, a festive Christmas creation for the month of December.
We began with the most basic Udon noodle in light Dashi broth, Kake Udon (small $3.80, regular $5.60, large $7.40). This dish can be eaten plain with complimentary condiments, or with your favorite fried Tempura items.
I tried the Udon with my fave crispy Tempura bits, seaweed, plum and scallions. The noodle was pretty good, I liked that the broth wasn't too salty. The assorted Tempura items were rather normal though.
Moving on to the 2nd dish, Curry Udon with Chicken (small $6.80, regular $8.60, large $10.40). The curry sauce was a tad watery and too salty for my liking. This dish may appeal to people with a heavier palate.
Next up, the Kama-age Udon (small $4.80, regular $6.60, large $8.40), served warm with a savory dipping soup. This Udon has an extra springy texture, I like this dish the most! We paired this dish with a breaded chicken chop, which was not too bad.
For a limited period, a Festive Christmas Udon dish will be available at the United Square outlet only. This brightly colored dish comprises of Maru-Ten's signature al dente Sanuki udon infused with fragrant matcha flavor, and topped with its in-house tangy tomato sauce. These are accompanied by a trio of crunchy delights - crispy Arancini (a croquette of rice and shrimp), tempura Shiso leaf and sweet Pumpkin slices. The Christmas Udon is priced from $11.80 for small portion, $13.80 for regular and $15.80 for large portion.
This pretty Italian-style Japanese Udon dish does look very tempting, but since I have a phobia of cheeses, I did not try this dish but from the reactions of my fellow food tasters, it was well received by everyone. The Christmas Udon will be available from now till Christmas Day, do give it a try if you love creative East-meet-West dishes like this.
After having a lot of Udon, the final dish of the day is surprisingly a soupy rice dish. Let's take a look at the 5 steps to order the Soup Ten-don.
First, pick a bowl size (small $2.80, regular $3.80, large $4.80). The bowl will then be filled with pipping hot imported Japanese steamed rice.
Small 220g, Regular 330g, Large 440g |
Then, choose your preferred Tempura toppings, and pass the bowl to the friendly staffs for adding of original Ten-don sauce. Proceed for payment and help yourself with the hot soup dispenser at the counter.
From right - Broccoli, Tamagoyaki, Ebi & Pumpkin Tempura |
I did not add a lot of soup though, just enough to moisten the rice for easier consumption. My choices of Tempura items were mostly alright except for the battered Tamagoyaki which was very dry, I didn't fancy it at all. Otherwise, this was an okay dish. I still prefer having Udon over rice if given a choice.
**Thank you Yuji san, and Japan PR Agency for the tasting session.
